About EFNEP

  • An independent study by the Produce for Better Health Foundation in 2002 found that EFNEP is by far the most effective federal program in increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. Diets high in fruits and vegetables decrease the risk of cancer and lower blood pressure in some individuals.
  • Cost-benefit analyses show that for every $1 invested in EFNEP, between $3.63 and $10.64 is saved in future health care costs.
  • EFNEP helps limited resource families with children eat a healthier diet and save money on food at the same time.
  • Skills learned in EFNEP help clients gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. According to one client, "EFNEP helped me to gain the confidence to get my GED. It was a long, hard process, but with the confidence I gained from EFNEP, I made it. After I earned my GED, I decided to go to college and am now…studying to become an LPN."

The "Excellence in EFNEP" National Recognition Program is sponsored by the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture and presented in cooperation with the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, Board on Agriculture Assembly, Board on Human Sciences, and Council for Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching.
